If there is one thing I can say about the last part of this series is that it was pretty messy. Not the animation which didn?t get nearly as bad as that flashback arc, but just the fights that occurred were pretty bloody.
Impressions:
We really got to see Nataru continue his revenge and killing anyone that got in his way. It?s kind of ironic that some of the worse members behind the Ryunka incident either were arrested and got away while the toad characters were brutally ripped apart and killed. It really makes him a pretty dislikeable guy when he just goes around slaughtering people. Sure I can understand his grief, but I can?t excuse what he is doing. It would have been simple to pass along their locations to Birdy and let them get arrested again.
The end of this series did open up the possibilities for another season with the reappearance of Gomez. There is a lot more going on here than has been dealt with. It?s not a surprise that they denied knowing about the experiments that created Nataru. Still when you consider conspiracies there is some potential for a good third season.
Final Words:
Overall this was a pretty good season from Birdy. I?d probably put the story at a higher level since it focused more on Birdy than Tsutomu. That guy actually is a better character when he isn?t the major focus of events. We got to see Birdy?s past and gain a greater understanding as to the situation she grew up in. You knew she was a powerful character and yet I didn?t expect her to be created and educated for a single purpose. It?s a strange thing to have a persons entire life organized and planned at the moment of their creation.
I?ll say right now that the animation was probably the weakest part of this. Overall it was pretty solid but it had a habit of getting pretty bad at certain points. The fight in Birdy?s past was pretty horrific to watch. You were seeing blobs flying all over the place and could barely tell who was actually involved. They could probably do better if there is another season. I will give them credit for not holding back during Nataru?s attacks. They were pretty messy affairs with limbs being ripped off and blood getting everywhere. Just wish they could have made the fights a bit cleaner.
The music was pretty good and I can?t complain about that. Even though the animation could get rough hearing the familiar music during the fights made them worthwhile. Think the OP also worked really well for the series and helped in getting excited about what was to come.
While I did appreciate giving Birdy a romantic interest to flesh her out some more I could not get behind Nataru. I?m not saying that those criminals did not do a horrific thing with the Ryunka and cost many lives. It?s simply that going around and slaughtering people for revenge is just going too far. The toad characters in particular were simply trying to not get killed. If they didn?t think that Birdy was behind it or that it wasn?t safe they might have just turned themselves in. Besides at the end of the day Nataru was enjoying killing and torturing. No matter the reasons behind it he became just as bad or worse than the people he was going after. If it wasn?t for Tsutomu?s intervention Birdy might have been added to his hit list.
Overall I enjoyed this season just as much as the first season. While the title still doesn?t sound great the story behind it is quite good. Birdy and Tsutomu grew as main characters which was a nice thing to see. Birdy gained a romantic interest and Tsutomu stepped up when Birdy needed some help, both in her memories and in the last fight. If they wanted to create another season I?d gladly check it out. At the end of the day this was a good show with some minor flaws.
