Add to myYahoo! We’re introduced to Black Star and Tsubaki, who’re very similar to Maka and Soul Eater personality-wise (Black Star being the loud mouth and Tsubaki being more calm and calculating) except that Tsubaki is the weapon and Black Star is the Meister. Their latest mission to take down Al Capone ends in a failure due [...]

What a strange kanji to use for “koe” in the episode title. Presumably Amatsuki’s pulling the usual trick of using Ye Olde Kanji because it’s a historical show or summat.
Kon brings Toki to meet Jouji Nakata in his latest disguise as some important monk dude named Shamon. This automatically means that he is awesome, which he proves at the end of the episode… but alas, these summaries are chronological, so before that Shamon basically exposites that he can’t help Toki go home unless they hunt down the mysterious squeaky voiced evil guy from the first episode. To be honest, I spent most of this sequence thinking about the fact that Shamon has unusually hairy knuckles, so your guess is as good as mine as to the complexity of the dialogue.
Moving swiftly on, Toki comes across a couple of samurai who mock Kuchiha for being a girl; while Toki steps in to try and help, obviously he’s not much use (after all, with only one eye he’s got no real depth perception, which isn’t great in a fight) but Kuchiha scares them off by revealing that she’s possessed by an inugami of some kind; this seems to manifest itself in glowing red spots, but I’m sure we’ll get an explanation later on. Despite Kuchiha’s anger at Toki, he organises a plan to get back at the samurai by using scientific knowhow to pretend to be an animal spirit seeking vengeance upon one of them. When the samurai go to complain to Jouji Nakata, he sends them packing; I’d like to believe that the power of the resonance in his basso profundo voice compelled them to flee, but that’s not the best dramatic motivation ever…
Anyway, Amatsuki continues to be a rather pleasant little show. It’s almost anodyne in that I can’t really think of anything to pick fault in but I’m not chomping at the bit to sing its praises or anything. The brushing-over of the inugami reveal suggests we’ll learn more about this aspect of Kuchiha later, which gives a little bit of continuity to an otherwise fairly standalone episode, and the resolution to the samurai problem showed a modicum of intelligence that I wasn’t really expecting from the writing, but overall I’d be hard pushed to say exactly what it is about Amatsuki that’s appealing. Hopefully I’ll get a clearer picture of the show’s real strengths as it progresses.

Shintaro Kurenai seems to be a high school student who takes on jobs to rough people up for cash on occasion; for some reason his body is peculiar, but the show hasn’t seen fit to elaborate on what exactly is up with that at the moment. Anyhoo, his “boss”, Benika, arranges for a young girl, Murasaki Kuhoin, to be kidnapped from her father; she is shut away for no immediately apparent reason, although her stepmother’s hatred of her might have something to do with it. Benika offers Shintaro the job of being Murasaki’s bodyguard to protect her from unspecified problems, which he accepts after having a patented angsty flashback to his childhood; however, despite seeming to warm up to him Murasaki runs away from his studio apartment when Shintaro goes to school, causing him to have to run out to find her after dark; one small tantrum about being left alone later, all seems to be patched up.
The first part of this episode is deliberately confusing, and I have to say I really didn’t like it at all - aristocratic people bandying around names that meant nothing to me makes me feel stupid, to be honest. Imagine my surprise when the writing proved to be surprisingly interesting and the characters well portrayed; both Shintaro and Murasaki feel like real people, rather than anime charicatures. Murasaki in particular is impressive - this seems to be a good season for break-out seiyuu performances, as this appears to be Aoi Yuuki’s first role and she pulls it off with impressive aplomb.
I suppose I should have thought more carefully about this series considering that Kou Matsuo, the man behind Red Garden, is behind the wheel. While I don’t think the first episode of Kurenai is quite as strong as Red Garden’s was, Kurenai clearly has an advantage in that it appears to have actual money behind it, rather than the magical pixie dust that Gonzo seems to think funds the creation of anime.
So there’s ANOTHER Thursday night anime that seems to be worth following. Obviously Thursday is a night of otaku joy in Japan. I have but one first episode left that I’m planning to try (Himitsu, of which I hear terrible things…) and then I can get on with catching up a bit!

Add to myYahoo!Youtube link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gRPnvxmE6d4Okay, this show has turned rather interesting now. King Gilgamesh managed to survive unharmed from the assassination attempt, apparently due to the curse of Druaga, and Kaaya is probably way more older than she looks like. At the least, it seems that she and King Gilgamesh knows each other, and she also knows [...]
