Kanokon - Quick Impressions

I’m actually watching a couple of first episodes this season, mainly because I need a way to procrastinate doing all the stuff I’ve got due this week. I think Kanokon was one of the first anime out with subs so here goes:Kanokon features a tsundere meganekko iinchou. A good way to start out!

Zettai Karen Children (Absolutely Lovely
Children) Episode 1 - Absolutely Lovely! They Are Called “The Children”!

Three psychic children - perverted telekinetic Kaoru, posh psychometrer (she’s Karasuma from Witch Hunter Robin) Shiho and not-easily-pigeonholeable teleporter Aoi - are treated like animals by their handler and controlled with psychic chokers that limit their massively destructive powers. On the tail of the gay stereotype to end all stereotypes, who turns people into metal statues with his magic purple orgasms, they end up relying on their new handler, the kindly scientist Kouichi, to help them defeat him. Thus, a shounen fight show was born!

It’s funny how shows strike you sometimes. I dislike Kaoru intensely (LET ME SHOUT A LOT AND BE DIRTY, TEE HEE HEE!) and this show is hardly anything special, but I rather enjoyed the first episode of Zettai Karen Children. Not in a “oh yes, I shall watch this every week and glory in its magnificence” way or anything, but for a kid’s show on a Sunday morning you could do a lot worse; the animation isn’t bad, the action scenes were well directed, and it was even mildly amusing at times. It’s not enough to keep me watching the show by any means, but if you’re not quite as stuck-up as I am and just want a mindless kid’s show to watch then you can’t really go too far wrong with this one!

Macross Frontier Episode 1 Revisited

I am making this post solely to get the TV broadcast of episode 1 of Macross Frontier off my computer.

Why? Because I KEEP WATCHING THE DAMN OP OVER AND OVER AGAIN AND IT’S A TOTAL WASTE OF MY TIME. It’s so nice to have the Maaya/Kanno combo back together again, however briefly, and the OP animation, although not especially astounding or anything (like, say, Soul Eater, which I shall get around to blogging shortly once my retinas have recovered from the concentrated awesome), is perfect for the show. Opening sequences make me happy.

My thoughts on Macross Frontier as a whole are fairly unchanged. Lanca, as we must now call her, is still treading the very, VERY thin line between moe-moe brat and possibly worthwhile love interest thanks to Megumi Nakajima’s rather unaffected voice-acting; I found her both more annoying AND more tolerable at various points throughout the episode. I still think I want Sheryl to be the main female lead, though the OP promises glowy special powerness from both of them so I have everything crossed Lanca turns out to be more interesting. The TV edit makes things a bit tighter by framing the concert sequence in a better dramatic context amongst other small changes, but then the original Deculture edit was so incredibly polished that it’s like gilding the CG mecha-lily; I’m still a bit unsure whether in trying to please absolutely every fan demographic Kawamori and co aren’t going to end up falling flat on their faces, but one can only hope they won’t.

Anyway, I’m going to watch the OP one more time before detoxing until Thursday. Altogether now, “hoshi wo meguru yo, JUNJOUUUUUUUUUUUUU!”
